- When preparing her character of River on Firefly, she would think back to herself as a young girl and take those experiences and put them into her performance.
- Whilst practicing shooting on the set of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, she got too close to the shooting range and now has a small scar on her face.
- As a child, Summer’s favorite actress was Juliette Binoche. She used to watch and re-watch her movies.
- Summer has always been a fan of science fiction and loves being a science fiction actress. Her mother used to read sci-fi books to her as a child and it has helped her with being imaginative when playing her characters.
- Summer is a big fan of the writer Josh Friedman, who also wrote the “Pilot” episode of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
- In an online interview in April of 2007, Summer said that she daydreams about playing the role of a chef or a cowgirl.
- Summer supports the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In February of 2008, she donated a hand-painted and signed pet bowl to their Los Angeles branch for a fund-raising auction.
- Summer raises money for BC Women’s Hospital & Health Centre in Vancouver, Canada which looks after the health of women and newborns in particular.
- In 2005, Summer was voted as the Best Actress by the SFX Magazine‘s readers for her performance in the movie Serenity.
- In 2006, Summer won the Saturn Award as Best Supporting Actress for the movie Serenity. She also won the SFX (UK) Best Actress Award in 2005 for the same role. In 2008, she won a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
- Summer claims that she never watched the Terminator series of films before being cast in the television adaptation Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
- Summer resides in Los Angeles, California. She moved to LA when she was 19 years old. As she was auditioning for acting roles, she still danced the tango for a year.
- Summer auditioned for X-Men: The Last Stand, for the role of Kitty Pryde, which ended up going to Ellen Page.
- When asked what kind of animal she would like to be, Summer said that she would want to be a pony. This, she explained, was because her mother used to own a horse and raised her and her sisters on stories, books, and movies about horses.
- In Serenity, Summer did most of her own fight and stunt scenes. The two scenes in which a stunt double was used were the scenes that required her to fall by somersaulting or jumping down stairs.
- Summer is 5 feet and 6.5 inches (1.69 metres) tall. She is right-handed, but dances as a “lefty”.
- Summer is of Scotch-Irish and German descent. She can almost speak flawless English and Russian accents.
